What is Retinal Detachment?

Retinal detachment happens when the retina separates from the back wall of the eye. A common pathway starts with a retinal tear, allowing fluid from the vitreous cavity to pass under the retina and lift it away from its normal position.

This is an emergency because the detached retina cannot function normally. The longer it remains detached, the higher the risk of permanent vision loss.

Symptoms

  • Sudden increase in floaters.
  • Flashes of light in one or both eyes.
  • A dark shadow or curtain in the field of vision.
  • Reduced side vision or sudden blurred vision.

Laser treatment of the retina

Laser can be used for selected retinal tears or weak areas to create a controlled scar that helps seal the retina and reduce the risk of detachment. Some detachments require surgery such as vitrectomy, scleral buckle, gas, or silicone oil depending on the case.
